I haven't checked the site in weeks. I grew up in the Prodjects from 53 to 64, when I joined the Navy. I remember the great times The marble tornaments, Eddies candy store Sleigh rideing down the hill next to the handball courts . Thats befor they built the Cross bronx express way.
I grew up at 156 on the second floor . My window was right above the awning above the entrance, I remember going out on it to retreve balls that were thrown up and landed on it.
wow what memories this brings back.

Hello Kal...

There's a thread dealing with Ronai's on the board.

I knew many of the kids from the projects, but unfortunately I do not recognize your name. We probably overlapped at 109 and 82, but in different classes.

Suffering from a bit of nostalgia, I made a trip to the old neighborhood today. I drove Sedgwick Ave. from Fordham Rd. , up Tremont Ave. up and down University Ave, Montomery, Andrews and Popham Avenues. There have been changes but the basic neighborhood remains the same. The stores we knew are gone but others exhist. I walked through the Projects, the marble field is there but I doubt the kids even know about marbles. The area were the monkey bars were is still a play area but the monkey bars have been replace by a modern day jungle jim. The Church on University and Featherbed Lane is still there. I remeber going there for PAL after school. Mo more egg creams, fountain sodas, milk shakes , Park plaza bon bons or melo rolls.......alas, I miss the old days and didn't realize how wonderfull they were until they became memories

Does anyone remember the small diner on the east side of University between 174th Street and Grant Highway? It was actually an old dining car from the back of a train that was set up there. I remember that it had a counter, but not sure if there were any tables.

McBrides was the Diner's name. They did have tabels. I went there often, usually for a coffee and pie.
