Mike I've been living in Jersey for over 30 years. Should I test him on the theaters here? |

You guys are killin' me here with your memories.
Great job. Don't remember the theater on Fordham near Jerome but I do remember the RKO Valentin on Fordham and Valentine ave off the Concourse on the east side.

Hi Fran- I have friends who live in 930 Grand Concourse... building is great; very well kept. Nice apartments, too! I am up the Concourse a bit at Executive Towers. -Michael |

Hi Ralph- I live diagonally across the Concourse from your old building at Executive Towers (1020 Grand Concouse at 165th.) 1055 GC just got new lobby doors and a bit of "sprucing up" (they got rid of that horrible 1980's brown address "beam" that spanned the front that said "1055"), as well as new windows. Do you recall Executive Towers? What was Exec Twrs like when you lived at 1055 GC? What was 1055 like? What was your apartment like? -Michael |

mtbny7 Thanks for letting me know that 930 is still a nice address. My grandfather really took good care of the building also. Is the Executive Towers still a "good" address on the Concourse? I remember when it was the site of the Ursuline Academy. My sister, Helen, went there for two years before transferring to St. Simon Stock.

Hi Mike and Fran and all-
Executive Towers is doing very well... some new friends of mine just bought a two-bedroom co-op here for $317K! Fran, what did the Ursuline Academy look like? How old was it? I can never find any pictures of it or any history. Was it a "scandal" when they announced it was to be demolished? I have today off so I am going for a walk through Claremont & Crotona Parks on my way to Fordham Road. -Michael |

Ursuline Academy was just a lovely brick building that sat way up on the hill on the corner. Was probably pre-WWII. I don't remember much because I was only there once or twice with my sister. I'll have to ask her if she has any photos of the building.
When the diocese sold the property local Catholics were less than happy. Unfortunately, the big bucks seemed more important than keeping the Academy going. My sister was one of the few who did not live there. Many very rich young ladies went to Ursuline and lived at the school. Our dad worked a second job to pay the tuition. One of the VPs of Grace Lines had two daughters there. That's about all I know about the place. |

Mike,
Just read my sister, Frans', post about Ursuline Academy. It was set up like a compound of buildings, on the order of wealthy homes of the 1900. There was a lot of wood trim and hard wood floors, it was at least 3 stories high. It was right on the corner where the bus turned off the Concourse. All Hollows was across the Concourse from it. The nuns who taught there were french Canadian from well to do families. From the Concourse there were about 30 or 40 steps but if you went around the corner there was a short flight to the school buildings, oh, the nuns were Ursulines. I think they taught at St. Angela Merici grade school. My class was 22 girls, Santini Movers daughter, Grace Line daughter and 2 girls whos' dad was a spanish diplomat and me a superintendents' daughter. They had Tea Dances on Saturday afternoon I can't remember the name of the boys school that was invited. It was quite an experience but one that help me in life. With etiquette, diction, speech lessons it did help me in the world. |

Hi all-
Bob- the Paradise is spectacular, isn't it? I went for a tour of it about a week before it re-opened last year... amazing! Mike- I didn't make it on my walk BUT I am familiar with certain parts of the area... I sometimes come down from Park & 175th (my fav Salvation Army shop for vintage things) on the Webster Ave bus (Bx41) to Claremont Pkwy - where I get on Bx 11 up Clay to 170th & Concourse. And I have walked thru the park and along it's northern borders & Mt Eden Pkwy - it's very nice. Fran & Helen - WOW! I love all the info about the Ursuline Academy. Thank you! All Hallows HS is still in operation across the Concourse (on E 164th St & Walton Ave) and is one of the top 50 Catholic High Schools in the nation. Do anyone recall, on the corner of Grand Concourse & E 165th ST, the "modern" (circa 1960) synagogue "Young Israel"? It's now www.bxma.org What was it like in the 1960's? -Michael |

I was actually born on the Grand Concourse in the Royal Hospital on the corner of Burnside Ave. It was a private hospital that was on the top floors of the building which is still there.
In the 80's I looked at an apartment at 930 G.C. and thought it was a really nice layout. The only thing that kept me from taking it was that it was at the rear of the building, even though it was on a high floor it seemed dark in the daytime. They didn't have anything else available at the time so I ended up somewhere else. |
