Hi,

Don't recognize those names but is the name Condors in reference to the group that hung around the candy store (had to go up steps to get in) on University Ave off the corner of Bryant.

Peace.........

Hi,

You wouldn’t be Mike O’Malley would you?
I knew who some people were -- I would "occasionally" hang out around there.
Louie Lehman (spelling?), Eddie O’Connor,
Jimmy Keogh (ran into him about 30 years ago at Tom Thumb Bar on Jerome Ave--he couldn't remember my name but he remembered my mother very well--she used to walk the kids from PS109 to religion classes at St Francis every Tuesday, more than once she would grab his ear to get his attention when he didn't listen --What a way to be remembered--"You're the one with the mother that grabbed my ears"
Ira Joseph (not sure he actually part of the group) A few girls names I remember—Maureen? Pat O'Leary? they lived on Bryant--I think, the Longo sisters, (Vicky?) on Nelson. I can remember more faces but not names.

Does the name Alex Tomorelli familiar (from the projects)-- enlisted in the Army and went to Vietnam in 1967.
Curious---do you remember Miguel (Mike) Martinez (6+ ft tall —lived on Nelson Ave with an aunt and family—went into the Marines around 1965-6?

Peace.......

Hi Mike,
I think the bar across from the projects was Duffy's, down at Tremont and Univ there was Dooney's (or was it the other way around). Schacter's was between Andrews and University --1 block past 175th--Tenny Pl??
Ira had gone steady with my friend Sue briefly in 64-65--we were in JHS82 at the time. Ira and Miguel were friendly--I was going out with Mike (on and off for the next 3 years) While he was stationed in CA and we stayed in touch for a while.
Is Buddy Burnes--Michael Burnes?? Eddie Martinez?? I seem to remember an Edie Colon. I kind of remember a Spanish guy named Shorty--got into trouble with the law? I do remember a Spanish girl think here name was Jessie--she lived in a private house around 176 and Popham Ave. --same one???
When did you leave before you came back? Alex hung around there for a short time before he went off to the Army in March 67--
I have some contact with a few people from the neighborhood or at least I am in contact with people who are in contact with others.
I floated in, out and around the neighborhood--1964-65 hung around the Spanish crowd that stayed around the Community Center in the projects and outside the projects on 174th. From 1965-68 I was mostly outside the area.
In 1968 I stayed in the neighborhood again but with different people.
Alex and I ran into each other at the movies (over the bridge at the Coliseum on 181st on Broadway) The girls who were with me knew his sister --I did also but didn't realize she was "his" sister. They said hello--I knew who he was and just rolled my eyes--He made a remark and I answered--the rest became history. We started going out and were married in 1970 and stayed that way until he passed away in 1997.
What schools did you go to? I seem to remember that you were a few years older than me. I remember my brother telling me he knew who some of you were and he is 7 years older than me. That grocery store was right next to the candy store? What was on the other corner? A hosiery store, some kind of restaurant/catering place?? Shoemaker?
The more you think about it the more that comes back-- remember the pool hall down by the A&P--my brother's haunt--I used to run in there when my mother was shopping to make sure he stayed in the back so she wouldn't see him.--of course it cost time for the silence.

Hi Mike,

Thanks, and I am very sorry about your son. Losing a child is the worst thing--It has happened to people I know--. I have 2 boys and a grandson. I would go crazy if something happen to one of them.
But things happen for reasons we don't always like or understand. A long lost friend/boyfriend from New Jersey found me after Alex died. We had met down the NJ shore when I was 13 and he was 17--he went into the Army and was stationed in Germany--He was very serious and I was too young and having fun--no fight--no nothing-- we just stopped talking after 4 years. When he got out of the Army he came back to the Bronx to find me--I was married and gone--well to make a long strange story short--we have been together for the past 8 years.

I was laughing reading that story about Ira. Do you remember the "rumble" that never was in the 82 school yard? Ira spent the night in jail over that one.
The upholstery shop is maybe what I thought was a restaurant--they had curtains in the window. The dry cleaners came to me this morning--was the name Spotless (orange/red sign)? or was that down Featherbed Lane? I am also thinking that there was a photograhy studio there???? I remembered some of the stores on the other side but wasn't sure exactly where they were. I remembered the laundry and an old man and woman who would sit outside the store. The nick knack shop was a missing store. I never knew there was an alleyway that went up to Andrews. I lived at Steve's Pizza after Crown Pizza on Tremont raised their price to .15.

I see the old neighborhood all the time-- I work in the Bronx close to Yankee Stadium --When traffic gets really bad on the highways I use the local streets-- I take Odgen Ave to either University Ave. OR Jerome Ave to Fordham/Pelham Pkwy to New Rochelle -- that is the good part of working in the Bronx--I always can avoid traffic going through the side streets. I try not to look "too much" while I drive.

I would love to see the picture-- Mike from Davidson--name of Mike Valentine comes to mind??
There were so many different crowds-- and age ranges. There were hundreds of kids--. Don't remember a Harry Dennis --might recognize him but not his name. By any chance do you remember Sharon Quinn? She lived on 175th and Univ.
I kind of remember when you guys were booted out of the center --that is when the center was taken over by the next crew. Isn't that what part of the fuss was about?
When you mentioned the steps on 176th, I remembered another person that may have hung around with you guys for awhile--Joey Lamonte-- He knew Jimmy K. and I remember seeing them hanging out at the candy store. Not sure when he left--Just didn't see him anymore. He had a grandfather who lived in a house that was on the right side going down those steps--Joey lived on Popham with his mother (I think). I had a mad crush on him when he was in my 4th grade class.

I made it through good old Wm H Taft '69--proof there are miracles.

Peace............

My friend Linda Schreckinger and I had a huge crush on Jimmy Keogh. I have not thought of that name in years. He was in PS 109 a year or two older than us. Blonde hair, blue eyes, freckles?
