Stratford Ave.
Stratford House, the largest supportive housing for families in New York, has 60 units of housing. Palladia also opened Chelsea Court last year, with 17 units of housing for single adults. Stratford Ave Mural. |

SOrry bx1 but that mural looks like crap on a shingle.
That's nothing more than defacing property. You wouldn't find that crap in any refined part of a town. The person who painted it should go to jail for doing that. Tony |

I lived at 1154 Ward Avenue - just off of Westchester. I went to PS 77 from 1947 through June of '54 and then to JHS 123 until April '56 when we moved to LI. I was in the music class at 123.
Do you remember Joy Stationary on Westchester and West Manor Music School above it onn the second floor? The Chinese resturant across the street? Also the pool hall & dance studio located there? We belonged to the Young Israel on Stratford. E-mail me and we can chat about the old neighborhhod. Grow Old But Never Grow-Up and No Tan Lines |

I didn't keep the pics so I can't post them, but I'd be curious about the ones you have. Wrangler, I remember the places you mentioned. I shot pool in that pool hall. Joy stationary was owned by a heavyset guy with a limp, think his name was Teddy. West Manor School of music was Manny Kirschenbaum. The odor from the Chinese restaurant was so bad, I didn't start eating Chinese food till I was long out of the neighborhood.

I took trumpet lessons for four years at West Manor.
The smells from the Chinese resturant would float through the back door of the Young Israel - especially bad on Yom Kippor. I remember a camera store a few doors down from the resturant. Does anyone remember the sporting goods store on the corner of Westchester & Morrison? What about the pet shop on Morrison? The owners name was Henry. I used to help him out when I was a kid - all off of the books because I was only 12 or 13 at the time. I remember getting my shoes at Tom McAnn and rolls & rye bread at the bakery next to Joy Stationary. And I remember a kosher butcher on the corner of Manor & Westchester and numerous fruit stands. Who can forget the horse drawn peddlers with the friut & vegtable wagons, Good Humor & Bungalow Bar, the whip & other rides on the back of trucks. I remember when the vacant lots on Morrison were made into the ball fields that are there now. During the last six years ('96-'02) before I retired my job would tkae me to The Bronx at least once a month and often to our old neighborhood. The Young Isreal is long gone but the congragation moved to CO-OP City. My father (he passed away at 89 last April) would speak to Rabbi Berle often. The shul on Manor is a day care center and the one on Ward (just off of Watson) is a church. The neighborhood looks good with few, if any, vacant stores. I was, however, warned to becareful when I walked the streets. Well it's almost 10:30 and I've got to get going - heading down to Haulover Beach in North Miammi. I also remember the sporting good store on westchester and morrison aves. we used to buy our chino pants there the ones with the little belt on the back, also teddy from the stationary store,a dumpy litte guy,who watched you like a hawk when you were in the store.
wrangler,I used to fly pigeons for Henry who owned that pet store on Morrison ave and hung around there quite often! I remember all of the same things you do,the Bungalow bar truck was driven by a guy named Jimmy do you remember that? We used to sell the baby pigeons(squabs) to that chinese rest.on westchester for 50 cents,I'm sure they called it chicken!!!! I had a pigeon coop on morrison ave.in the lot next to that bowling alley, which i think now has an apartment bldg. there, could be I might have known you |

Thanks for the pics. Only confirms what I saw in the others. Think I remember one on corner of Manor and Westchster, next to a clothing store. Given where they got their poultry, I'm glad I didn't eat at the Chinese restaurant. Wrangler, that butcher shop was owned by Morris Siskind. Also got my shoes at Thom McCann. Favorite store along the way was the S&O Deli on Westchester between Manor and Stratford. Julie and Sidney would give me good stuff as they knew my family was in the meat business.

That spray can painting is the most disgusting thing anyone could do to the Bronx.
The people that did that crap should be put in jail for a long time. It's nothing more than defacing private property. It's no better than someone writing kcuf uoy on a wall. Trash made by trash. Tony |

This brings back great memories of the old neighborhood. I haven't been back there in over 30 years. I'd love to see what it looks like today.

I lived at 1255 Stratford Ave. started K. in 1949 and then went on to JHS 123. Then to James Monroe H.S. for only 21/2 yrs. quit to get married. Dumb move. Anyone remember candy store across the street from the grocery store fruit market and the Temple. It was called Penskys. There was a chineese laundry next then a shoe maker. Westchester Ave. was a great place to shop and the Pizza shop, one slice and soda for $1.00 The Picture of the Stratford house I don't remember on which part of Stratford Ave was it.

Knew families in that building, but my friends were a couple of years older than you. Did you know Bob Shusterman or his sister Carole. Other friend was Herb Deutsch who had a younger brother and sister.

Hi Flatfood, Good to hear from you. Yes I knew Herbie and his brothers name was Steve and sister was Linda. Her and I were friends. They lived (if I remember right) on the 2nd floor and we lived on the 5th. What A nice building it was. I lost track of Linda after she got married for the 2nd time. I do know they did camping and she had 2 cute little girls. Did you know Alfred Shapiro, he lived in the 13 hundred block of Stratford Ave. HOpe to hear more from you, I am now in Holiday Florida
