Hello! I too was a resident of 1154 Ward ave in the seventies and have fond memories of my childhood there. Can you please tell me all about what the building was like in the mid forties through fifties? I guess that for sentimental reasons I always thought of the building as some kind of a palace, with the stained glass lobby window, brass inlay on the floors, marble accents and your voice echoing through the hallways. Thanks in advance
What years did you live there? My parents moved there in about 1944 when I was two. We lived in apartment 3L & my grandparents lived in 6A. We lived there until April of '56 when we moved to LI but I visited often as my grandparents contiued to reside there until the late 60's.
When I was young I remember the lobby having a huge red velvet couch and two very large side chairs upolstered in the same fabric. There was also electric logs in the faux fireplace. You couldn't get entrance from the outer lobby unless you were bzzed in. By the front door there was a buzzer to call the super if you had deliveries.
There was a porter in addition to a super. Every morning garbage was collected via a dumbwaiter. In the summer each apartment was fitted with a screen door.
The court yards on either side of the front enterance had plantings & benches. Looking at the front of the building, there was a doctor's office on the right side.
E-kail me if you want more info and if you can remember the names of any of the long time residents.
Hello! Thank you for your reply. You described it just as I imagined. I have been told how beautiful the building was over 40 years ago. Unfortunately times have changed. I remember a little old man named Ben when I was a little girl and a lady by the name of Claire on the 2nd floor. I remember the synagogue on Manor ave and the empty lot next to the building as well as the deli on the corner of Stratford. Do you know anything about the name of the building being IDANNA?
