E.174 St was still there and functioning; no X-Bronx Expwy yet. I walked to PS 64 (I think) and Wade Jr High, before we moved to Popham Ave. Park Plaza movie, Luhr's candy and ice cream store on University, Krum's and Loews Paradise on Grand Concourse!! Finished last year at McCombs and went to Taft (graduated at the Loew's Paradise). I left NYC for good in 1963 and my folks left about 1967 or 68. The area was either getting bad or had gone bad, I don't recall. When did the area start skidding down?
I lived on 173rd and Clay, just down the hill from the Lebannon Hospital until 1965. That entire Claremont area was starting to go downhill and my family moved to the Fordham area.

I used to walk through the park with my friends. In the warmer weather, there was always a Good Humor Ice Cream truck on the corner of Morris and Mt. Eden, corner of the park. I also used to go to PS. 64 which of course meant that I used to walk across the Grand Concourse to get there. Dangerous walking for a 3rd grader.
Hi Tony, I lived 3 blocks down the hill on 173rd St from PS 70...Spent many hours in the schoolyard playing stickball and basketball
