"If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere, it's up to you, New Yawk, New Yawk"....

It could happen but so many of my family and friends say they would never in a million yrs. move back to NYC let alone the Bronx! If jobs took them back, they would live in Jersey or maybe Westchester County, and commute downtown.

I can't see it happening! Unless everyone that moved out, moves back in, I can't picture it. My best friend lives on Morris Park Ave., beautiful area with private homes, etc. and she says even that area is changing rapidly. For a divorced woman living alone, she is concerned for her safety and where she will live when it goes completely. I told her to move to Texas, where I am! Wink

Problem is, the nicer areas, no one can afford, and what are you getting for your money? Not much! A home in the Bronx for what I have here in TX, surely would cost over a mill. Guess how much my house payment is? 1500.00 a month! That's NOTHING, and we have a solid brick home, central heat, air, fireplace, carpeting, ceramic tiles, and a built in pool with jacuzzi and waterfalls in the backyard with four beautiful trees overlooking it.

Try getting that anywhere for under a mill. Plus, the public school system is so good down here (thanks to all the northerners that have moved down here and demanded good schools and joined the PTA), no one has to send their child to private school. So we have no tuition to pay. Cost of living here is low.

The only thing they don't have here is public transportation. They have park and ride, but you have to drive there, park your car in a lot, and go the rest of the way by rail...not worth it. They need buses like the Metro in NYC that stop at various points along the way, and then go straight to downtown Dallas and/or FW.

The area grew so much in the last 20 or so yrs. since we moved down here. They should've anticipated that and started the bus lines...they thought about a monorail to go over the highway, but that would cost too much money. With all the construction you see on the highways every day, what the hell is the difference? Instead of adding more lanes, build the damned monorail, I say!

Oh, and one more thing: Tornadoes!!!! Eeker Eeker Thank God we haven't been in one yet, but get warnings all the time, mostly during the spring.

Okay, enough bitching for now...hehehe.

Take care all!

Mass gentrification in the Bronx will not happen for a long LONG time.

The poor in the city will all be relocating to the BX before that happends. If anything the Bronx will be the remaining or last slum of the city. All of those people losing their homes in the LES, Harlem, and Brooklyn are coming to the Bronx. The borough has been only getting poor becuase mostly lower income people are moving in.

The population is also becoming even more Latino and Black. The White population is only highly consentrated along Pelham Parkway, Throgs Neck, Country Club, City Island and Woodlawn. The southern/western parts Morris Park and Throgs Neck are becomeing more and more Latino and Black.

Yep, you're right. Anyone I ask that used to live in the Bronx shake their heads vehemently when I ask them if they'd ever move back if circumstances allowed. What a damned shame, isn't it?

Although my friend, whom I will be visiting next week on Morris Park Ave., works in architect/construction and she told me some of her coworkers help build some of the condo's on Hunts Point. It definitely is making a change for the better, but who, I wonder, will be moving into those condo's if everyone's so "poor"? I just don't get it.

I will admit that rent is cheaper than if my friend got an apt. in Manhattan. A one room efficiency is like close to 2 grand! Eeker I have a whole house and backyard with a pool for less than that! Of course, I'm in Texas, but still...I just cannot fathom paying that much.

If I had to move back, and I could afford it, I'd like in Westchester County. I've gone to some nice restaurants by the malls out there and saw some gorgeous homes on nice property. But, that'll never happen. Wink

Hi Bxone,

I live in the Country Club section of the Bronx. We don't own, we rent and pay a lot of money to live in a good section of the Bronx.

But like everything else, things change. As one person put it, if your front yard is big enough they will knock on your door and offer to buy your house, for a nice price I might add. What annoys the hell out of me and everyone else in the area is that the developers don't give a rats a** if their homes get sold, their attitude is, if we can't sell it.......we'll rent it. And guess what is coming in....a lot and I repeat lots of Section 8's. Section 8 is guaranteed rent that is paid for by the Govt. (our tax dollars at work)to the landlord and we all know what's wrong with that deal....The people who really need it, don't get it, you have to know how to screw the system.

I could go on and on, but this is not the place to do it.

There are good and bad amongst all people.

On my block there are white trash drug dealers and drug users and their kids are a bunch of filthy dirty, disrespectful street urchins. They have pit bulls and try to intimidate anyone who poses a threat to them. They are so bold and brazen they have no respect for the police or anyone else.

I have 1 year to go before my husband retires and I have to say I can't wait to get out of the Bronx. I was born and raised here and I can't wait to leave. If I have upset anyone I apologize, but it breaks my heart when I see what is happening in this neighborhood. I saw it happen when I was a kid, now I have to go through it again. Where do we run to next???? Razzer Confused Mad Roll Eyes

It seems like the "urban" areas of the boroughs (Bklyn Hts/Park Slope/Williamsburg in Brooklyn, Astoria/Jackson Hts/LI City in Queens, parts of So Bronx, all of Manhattan, etc) are getting gentrified (or at least "better") and the more "surburban" areas of the boroughs are getting some problems.

Maybe you should move to glamorous Executive Towers! Big Grin

mtbny7, only a few areas are being gentrified and most are no where close to complete gentrification.

People don't want to live in the Bronx. If I was White I wouldn't want to, there is a lot of hatred towerds them over the fact there is so much poverty.

Well, I'm white and I love the Grand Concourse area and Executive Towers is BY FAR the nicest building I've seen.

I currently live on Upper East Side in Manhattan and occasionally I get "creeped out" walking home late at night along my street... I don't feel this way about the Grand Concourse at all. Only some areas of the Bronx are scary/trashed/horrible... so why lump the whole borough in as "a bad whole"?

... and every borough has "bad" areas. Maybe the Bronx has more than the other four, but I guess somebody has to be on the bottom of the list.

Look at places like Camden, NJ... recently rated the #1 most dangerous violent place in the USA. The Bronx is nowhere near that bad.

Yes, maybe a town in Penna or Utah or Idaho or Florida would be safer/cleaner/etc... but would it be 10 to 15 minutes away from mid-town Manhattan with all it has to offer?

Camden worse then the Bronx? The worst areas in Camden are just as bad as in the Bronx. Same with North Philly, Newark, D.C. It is a myth that one area is worse then another, they are all terrible. It is patches of bad streets that ruin the community.

There are neighborhoods in the Bronx that are VERY dangerous. Certain corners that are deadly. Like 183rd and Tiebout. i don't care if you White, Black, Puerto Rican or what, if you don't live on that block stay the hell off it. I used to watch people not from the neighborhood get shot at just for being strangers. Randall and Rosdale will guarentee you an arest if your white. It is a 3rd world open market of drugs. So much open drug dealing goes on there that the cops don't chase the dealers anymore.

The area your in is very, very poor. I can't belive you found a building in good condition there. It is directly on the Concourse so mabey thats why. I wouldn't reccomend walking around a lot at night in that neighborhood. Being White makes you stand out. It also makes you look rich and a good target of a robbery. But you should be fine besides that. I used to be involved in illegal activity and when I wanted a target, a lost White boy was gurenteed pay day. I was younger and stupid.

If this is your first time living in an apartment in the Bronx be ready for rats the size of cats, roaches, loud music, people knocking late at night for help (DO NOT OPEN DOOR) Home invasion is not fun. Especially when its 3 big guys with Uzis. No heat and hot water in the winter. No water presure in the summer becuase the hydrant is open.

Benifits include, Bronx bragging rights, easy train access, low rent.

If more people felt "creeped out" then the're would be less robbery victims. This is NYC, stay sharp. Or it may be the last time you take a walk down the block. The blocks around the Concourse have the highest robbery rates in the city. They are tightly packed, empty at night and not often traveled by cars. Very dangerous.

Why would you not be creeped out walking through a street in the south Bronx or Brooklyn. The "creeped out" feeling is what keeps you alive, its your awareness. When you put your guard down is when you get it.

Good luck in the BX. Don't be one of those idiots who think it can never happen to them, because then it will. Stay sharp and you should be fine, you are surrounded by a bunch of poor people who will kill you if they see or think you have enough money to pay their rent.

You know, even if you're views were true, it's not very nice of you to say that to me.

I'm sure you meant no harm but I'm a little taken aback by your comments.

mtbny7 , sorry if I sounded mean. But I am looking out for you. Never put your guard down. Watch your back at all times. You need to be aggressive in the hood. The ones who get robbed are the ones flashing there money on Shakespear Avenue while someone is following them and catching up quick.

I grew up on some of the worst blocks in the Bronx, and spend some time in Newark NJ every now and then, the hood is no playground. It is poor and messed up. A place people die trying to get out of. Remember that.

Good luck in the Bronx, i'm sure your new neighbors will be happy you are not some drug dealer or gang member starting trouble in their building.

Michael I am happy you like the Grand Concourse alot. I believe I made a post about this subject a few months ago to you back then.

Enjoy your new apartment, and the neighborhood. At the same time remember you are still in The Bronx. Keep you eyes peeled, I would not want anything to happen to you........

I was born and raised in the Bronx, and I am very proud of that fact. Dont let your guard down for anyone. There are too many people that become statistics in the Bronx, and I dont want you to be 1 of them.......

Living at Executive Towers and lovin' it!

I walked home last night through Joyce Kilmer Park in the snow... it was gorgeous!

I am jealous, Michael! The 161st St. station was my "home" station, the place where I took the train during my last two years of high school and to the city, when I got a job.

Would you believe I walked from the station all the way to my home on 158th and Park? Sounds like three blocks but it was more like three miles!!!

That tunnel thingie where the cars can go through under or over is still there right? If I remember correctly, there was even an entrance to the "D" train under that tunnel somewhere??

Good Luck in your new condo and say hi to the nabe for me!

Yes, Laura, you are correct! The subway entrance/exit for IND is still there; and so it the whole walkway/roadway tunnel thing under the Concourse.

158th and Park? That is far! Could you have taken the railroad to 162/Park "Melrose" station?

Michael Smiler

The nabe and my co-op say "hi" to you, too! Smiler
