Anyone from Clason Point ? -- 40's and 50's ? -- I lived on Theriot Ave and went to Holy Cross -- Hung out at Evelens Candy Store with the "Nobles " -- Nicknamed Freddie Box
Fred, I am probably the only one here who knows Clason Point. Do you remember Clason Point beverage? I spent lots of days and nights when I was a little girl on Underhill Avenue, this was my grandfather's house. Is it still there? Clason Point was the country. It was beautiful, my mother went to school at Holy Cross. I also remember Holy Cross Church, is that still there?
Hi Barb -- Sure I remember Clason Point Beverage and Underhill Ave. --- I have'nt been back to the "Point " in years so I could'nt tell you whats still there. I live in Florida since I retired but I still miss the Bronx. -- What years did your Mom go to Holy Cross ?
Finally found someone who knows Clason Point. How happy this makes me.My mother went to Holy Cross school around 1927, she is sitting here with me now, and she is 89 years old, God bless her. All of my family on both sides were from Clason Point, my family owned and operated Clason Point beverage, the butcher shops on St Lawrence avenue, and Superfuel co. My mother told me about the nuns, and most of the kids in her class were Irish. She still remembers their name, most of them, anyway. She said to tell you she used to swim in the 'creek'...I think you're too young maybe to remember any of these names and things. Please write more.
Barbara I grew up in Clason Point and left when I got married in the 70's. Go back to visit once in a while. Have a lifelong friend who still has a business there. You may want to look at www.clasonpoint.org which is a website dedicated to those of us who grew up in this wonderful neighborhood. Remember Clason Point Beverage and Holy Cross Church very well.
Barbara when did you leave? Remember the monument on Patterson Ave, Higgs and Lindner hardware, George's service station, Harding Park, the Beach movie,Paley's grocery store, Luboff's candy store. I could go on and on.
Hi Highland Joe, I remember the Beach very well, but you have to remember that I only was there at my grandfather's house until I was 10 years old, and then he died, and the properties were sold. I remember the empty lots that my two boy cousins and I walked through to get to the Beach theatre. My mother and my father, both grew up in Clason Point, and thank you for that site, I will check it now, hopefully my mother can remember some more things. Stay well.

Hi Barb -- Your Mom's a little older than me ( God Bless ) so her memories go further back than mine. I'm 66 and went to Holy Cross from 1946 to 1954. Mother Christopher was the Superior then and Father Sylvestor the Pastor. Ask Mom if she remembers the Cadet Corp. that used to meet in the convent every Tuesday. Father Louis ran it and he would collect our 10 cent dues every Tuesday and then go across the street to Hogans Bar and drink it up. -- How about Father Justin, the little old Italian Priest, he would come to our house once a week for macaroni and meatballs. Good memories that will always be in my thoughts. - Ask Mom if she remembers the hill on St. Lawrence. -I lived at 724 St. Lawrence after I got married in 1960 -- I would love to hear more of her memories and some names she recalls, maybe we have some mutual friends -stay well -
Hi Barbara Didn't realize that your memories of Clason Point were from such an early stage of your life. But on the site I mentioned, there will be many pictures and memories that will bring a smile to your mom's face.
Hi Fred and Highland Joe. Thank you so much for your kind words, yes my mother is very much older than you guys, she is 89 years old.
Fred, if you lived on St Lawrence Ave, the St Lawrence Beef market was my uncle John's, and the vegetable store was my uncle Joe's store. Did you know the Carozza family from around there, or the Raimo's or the Valentino's ... these were my mother's cousins. Oh my mother remembers Mother Christopher and Father Sylvestor. They were probably much older by the time you got to that school.
Barb -- I really don't recall either store, maybe they were before my time. -I did have a very close friend named Patty Raimo and I went to school with a Butch Valentino. -- How about the Romano's ( my cousins ) - The Civitano's - The DePelligrini's - The Pisicotta's - Most of my friends were from around Noble Ave. (Evelyns Candy Store ) - Once in awhile I would go to Harry's Candy Store on Beach Ave. -- Some more names - Giordano - Cerone - Manfredo - Brucale - Filomia - Zinzi - Keep writing we'll hit on someone we have in common -
What is Butch Valentino's first name, and my mother's first cousin's name was Paddy Raimo, but this must be your friend's fathers, because my mothers cousins would be her age now.
barbraallen -- I don't recall Butch's first name - but - My friend Paddy 's father was also Paddy and his mom's name was Mae and I think he had a sister named Mae also -- I was told my Paddy passed away a few years ago -- Also my Dad was good friends with your Moms cousin Paddy -- I kinda remember that Butch might have been related to the Balsano's or the Lombardo's - I went to Holy Cross with Mikey Balsano and Nicky Lombardo also my friend Bob DePelligrini married Rosemary Balsano -- Any relation ?
Barbara, Joe Carozza was a good friend of mine. I'm 58 and Joe must be the same age since we were in the same class at JHS 125 for many years. We also hung out together after our high school years. I remember he had an older brother but don't remember his name. Remember they lived somewhere near St Lawrence but I haven't spoke to Joe in over 30 years. Don't think Carozza is such a common name so its probably the same guy.
Fred, vaguely remember some of the names you mention but I think they were a few years older than me. I lived down the end of Soundview near Shorehaven. Remember a Vinnie Manfredo who used to go out with an older cousin of mine.
HighlandJoe --- As I was saying Vinnie was a friend and yes we are older than you -I'm 66 and most of the names I mentioned are around that age --- I remember Shorehaven but was never a member -It was to expensive for my family back then. -- Do you remember the old Ferry Inn at the end of the "Point " ? -- The Democratic Club by the monument ? -- Joe Stroels bake shop ? --
Hi guys, my mind is reeling from these names, LOL, but my mother being so old, cannot remember most of them. I hope you two find a lot of friends, and Fred, thank you for reminding my mother of Sister Christopher, she had a big smile on her face! Shorehaven was expensive, I went to Golden beach, and Vogt's beach, remember those? Clason Point was the country for me, remember how beautiful it was. Underhill Avenue was my entire family, my grandfather's house was the beautiful brick one with the terrace in front, and to the side was his garden. I am sure I would not like to see it today. Sooooo sad...
Barbraallen -- I kinda remember your grandfathers house -- The terrace and garden stands out in my mind --- I also had a friend that had a house on Underhill for awhile -- His name was Bobby Pelligrini and his wife was Rosemary Balsano --- Anyway --- Orchard Beach was my gangs getaway in the early and mid 50's. -- I'm glad I could bring a smile to your Moms face -- I wish we could all go back to those days --- You and Mom stay well -Talk to you again
