Fred, I remember Vinnie being such a great guy. Shorehaven was too rich for my blood also, but I did get in by working there a few times. Stroehl's had the best crumb buns I have had till this day. I used to work next door at Willie's meat market and Mahoney's grocery. Spent many an evening at the Ferry Inn.
Great sharing memories with you and Barbara. |

Hey Barb & Joe --- Vinnie still lives in the Point but has lots of health problems -- Rosemary's dad was Nick , so you're probably right about her being your playmate ,she and Bobby now live in North Jersey -Patterson, I think --- I don't see them much anymore , but I do keep in touch with Bobby's brother and I'll have him ask Ro to contact you through this site --- I remember Dr. Fiore too --- Joe - I guess you knew Billy Malloy who owned the Ferry Inn and maybe Gabie Caraciolla and Larry Detori and Johnny D.P. and Frankie Civitano - We all were Ferry Inn regulars -- Oh by the way I looked up that Classon Point site you mentioned to Barbra and have already exchanged e mails with 2 of my old gang --- Thanks for the info. ---

Thanks Fred. I bet Rosemary won't even remember me, I hope she does though. I remember her mother too, she was beautiful. They were a very nice family, if I am not mistaken, she also had a little brother, I think he was Nicholas.
Go have a good time in the sun, do you have a pool at your house, or do you go to the beautiful beaches. My friends live in Boynton Beach, and Inverness, and Rockledge. |

|
Barb -- You're right about Ro's brother -His name is Nicholas - It's a small world and it keeps getting smaller --- I live in Homosassa which is about 10 miles west of Inverness --- There's a resturant in downtown Inverness called Stumpknockers -I bet your friends have been there -- Best frog legs and catfish in the area --- I live in a retirement village called Walden Woods -- We have our own huge pool - shuffleboard & tennis courts and a big clubhouse with a full kitchen for gatherings and parties we have. --- Do you get to visit your friends in Inverness ?

No, but my daughter was there, and she said it was very lovely. Actually in Inverness is my father, he lives there and his two 'other' daughters live there. All I know about them is they play golf..hahaha
It sounds great, we're thinking of leaving here soon, as this town is too big now, it's like a mini L.A. |

Hi Barbara,
Nice to hear from you. I have been back to The Point just about every summer to visit my cousin who still lives at 139 Pugsley Avenue and to go to Saint Raymond's Cemetary to visit my parents as well as brothers and other relatives final resting places. Also, to catch up with a few friends who still call The Bronx their home. I can tell you that the houses do look the same. As when I left The Bronx, in 1975 there are bars on so many houses, both windows and doors. My old block Pugsley is really impressive. There is pride in ownership of houses and land. They now have 'block captains,' who patrol the streets on a regular basis, seniors during the day and working men and women, when they come home from work in the evening and night time hours. The area from Lacombe Avenue to Beech Avenue does look about the same. However, what I notice most is people now double parking which makes a two way road, basically a one way road. It is really hard to navigate some of those blocks for out-of-towners, like me, lol. I will check with a few people to find out if Clason Point Beverage is still there. My feeling is no, however, I will ask before I make my answer final. I remember my family, I lived in a three family house, use to get soda and seltzer water from The Bronx River Beverage Company. They would deliver once a week, pick up the empties, etc. I know that that place is no longer in existance. As kids, we use to squirt those seltzer bottles at each other till our parents caught us. What great memories we had. About 7 cousins living under the same roof. It just didn't get much better then that. Okay, Barbara, thanks for writing. I will get back to you on the Clason Point Beverage Company as soon as I write and hear from my cousin and some past classmates that are still in The Point. Be well, Barbara. Talk to you soon. With Warmest Wishes, John. Born and raised in Clason Point. Went to PS 69, JHS 125 & James Monroe. Was drafted into the Army 10/31/1966. Spent a year at Fort Riley, Kansas & a year in Vietnam. Thank you John, what a nice guy you are, as evidenced by your kindness in searching and replying. But then, everyone from our era was a bit nicer than the people today, that's my opinion.
I will let my mother know that maybe her house is still standing on Underhill avenue, because that's where she was born and that entire block was comprised of my mothers huge family! |

Hi Barbara,
Thank you for the very kind words. They are so very appreciated. You can be sure that your Mothers house is still standing. I think most houses were made of brick back then, so it should look almost the same. A lot more congested as most people, as you know have two or three cars these days and in Clason Point, really no place to put them. I asked my friend, Ronnie Colamarino, who lived at 601 St. Lawrence Avenue and now owns a place called Cosmos, an Italian style resturant on East Treamont, near Belmont & Arther Avenues about the Clason Point Beverage Company. He still has a lot of contacts in Clason Point and The Bronx, in general. He told me that he remembers the place, however, it is long gone now. I use to eat in a resturant called Tony & Jerry's, close to the Holy Cross Church on Soundview Avenue. Oh, it was so great there. That too, is long gone. I wrote to the daughter of Tony, who I saw post on Clasonpoint.org. However, she never returned my e mail. Again, thank you Barbara for the very kind words. I know you are right. People from our generation grew up in a better time and in general were much nicer. Hope to talk to you again, Barbara. Take care now be well. Very Fondly, John. Born and raised in Clason Point. Went to PS 69, JHS 125 & James Monroe. Was drafted into the Army 10/31/1966. Spent a year at Fort Riley, Kansas & a year in Vietnam. Disabled for life while 'in country.' |

Hi John, ask your friend Ronnie if he remembers St Lawrence Beef Market, it was right under that elevated train. This was owned by family members also, and the vegetable store that was next to the butcher shop.
Oh those beautiful days in Clason Point, playing in the empty lots, going to the movies, I can't remember the name was it the Beach? My cousins and I and my brother all playing tag on Underhill ave then going to the Clason Point beverage up the street, also owned (I told you) by my family, for cold sodas. Those were truly beautiful times. Never was afraid, never felt any danger. What happened to this country? It's a shame....On a sadder note, you mentioned St Raymond's cemetary: all the family is buried there. |
