Hey Mike,
No, that wasn't me, we lived over on Bainbridge and 193rd St. I'm trying to think of who you're thinking of. I used to go to Huey's all the time though. I think you lived on 194th & Decatur, right? Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else. We lived a couple doors down from the Ringwalds, maybe you knew Chris or Tom, the older one. In any case, it would be great to connect with somebody from the old neighborhood again. Billy |

Hi Billy, I did live at 194/Decatur...Used to play corner ball off the point at Marion and 193 with the crowd that hung around on Marion...Yes I knew all the Ringwald's Carl was going to be a priest..I played basketball with Tom in his backyard...he also dated one of the Candaffio twins for a while..My younger brother Andy hung out with Chris for years. Who was the family that lived near the Ringwald's that the Dad had his own taxi ? Worked with him as an usher over at OLM. Looking foward to hearing from you...been trying for months to find someone from the neighborhood...What year and what high school did you graduate??? BTW the guy I thought you were is Billy Nichuals.

Hey Mike,
The guy with the taxi was none other than my dear old dad! He was the oldest licensed taxi driver in NYC and a lady made a documentary about him a couple of years ago. He continued to work until about a year and a half ago, when he was hospitalized for weakness and had to undergo a coronary bypass, which wasn't totally successful. Last year we decided to send him down to Florida to stay with my sister who lives in Ft. Lauderdale and he continued to get weaker, so she brought him into the Cleveland Clinic where he was diagnosed with bone cancer, and he didn't really live that much longer. June 26th will be the one year anniversary of his passing. It sure is great to know somebody from the old place. I went to Tolentine for a while but then I became ill with some kind of seizure disorder and then took off for a time and finished up at JFK High School in 1974, then went on to college at Lehman. Hope to hear from you soon, Mike. Billy |

Holy Cow, First of all, sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad...He was a great guy...We spent many a Sunday morning down at the Church as ushers for all the Masses..drank a lot of coffee with him...He was also in the Holy Name Society with Rocco Carbone...It's funny,,after I sent ya that post this morning, the thought went thru my mind...I wonder if the cab driver is Billy's Dad? Anyway, I know we played ball together on Bainbridge and down the corner at Marion/193..this is great...hope to hear back from ya..I know you hung on in the hood until it got really bad and I would imagine you are either in Riverdale or Woodlawn now..the rest of the good ole Bronx is in sad shape.

Hey Mike,
Thank you so much for your kind words about Dad, yeah, he was a great guy and a good person. Mom & Dad stayed in that house until 1984 when they had a terrible fire. We were lucky, they weren't hurt and the only thing we lost was material things. I think it made us realize how important life is. Now there's nothing left of those 4 row houses at 193 and Bainbridge, just an empty lot. Mom still lives in the Bronx, near Mosholu Parkway and I live in Riverdale. I always say that I'd like to go back to my real roots and live in the place where my family comes from, the part of the south Bronx which is called Port Morris now, and it's becoming quite the place to live, very artistic and trendy. |

Hello all,
I lived on 193rd and Decatur. We may have played stickball/and or corner ball against your neighborhood group once or twice in the late 50's to mid 60's. Some of our group lived on 193rd up towards Marion. People like; Ed Beban, Bob Haas, Joe Thompson. One lived on Marion between Fordham and 193rd; Jim Feddick. Huey's was THE penny candy store! Also for comics and 5 cent packs of Topps baseball cards. I remember in 1957 when Sputnik went up, Huey had a gum called Sputnik. It was round with aquamarine colored sugar all around it and it was quite large in size. Almost like a "jaw breaker". Do you remember Mary's Lunchonette on the corner of Bainbridge and 194th? 2 doors down from her was a pizzaria, it is still there as of 3 months ago. Used to get 3 slices(45cents) 2 cokes(20 cents) 5 plays on the jukebox(25cents) and a dime left over. |

Hi Denizen, Welcome... Myself and Billy N were in the group that came up behind you...1965 until the early 70's. Most of the names you mentioned are familiar because I have Jim's older brother, Fred's book.....Marion, Bainbridge and Decatur...what a great memoir that was!! I lived on the corner of 194/Decatur and Billy lived at 193/Bainbridge. Spent a lot of time in Huey's Candy Store and Louie's Pizza on 194 down the hill from Mary's Luncheonette...Hope to hear from ya soon!!

denizen, I think 384 was on the street between Marion and Decatur where there was a fire on the top floor of one of those tenement buildings. They were on the north side of the street and had odd house numbers, you had to be on the south side of 193rd st. My mother knew the lady who lived there, Mrs. Murphy, she used to walk her dog and chat with my mom. I think they had a few boys in their house. It was a pretty bad fire but luckily nobody was injured.
Mike, do you remember that fire? It was in the time you lived around the corner, like about 1967 or so, I'm not sure of the year. It was in the middle of the night and I didn't actually see it but you might've heard about it. |

Hey Denizen...Did you graduate from OLM? What year? What High School?...Do ya remember the great corner ball games at the corner of 193/Marion? Were you still living in the hood when Henry's Supermarket on Decatur burned down?
